Born in Chiba, Japan in 1985, Makita graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts with a BFA in Art Education in 2013.
Ai Makita is a painter who lives and works in Tokyo and New York and paints with motifs of artificial objects such as machines, metals, and plastics. She received her MFA from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013, and her graduation work was purchased by the University Art Museum. She recently participated in a residency program in New York, during which she was selected to participate in an exhibition at the Consulate General of Japan in New York, where har work will be on display for two months.
She has received numerous awards, grants, and residency opportunities, including the Terrada Art Award (Tokyo), the Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art (Kawasaki), a grant from the Pola Art Foundation (Tokyo), ART CAKE (New York), and the Varda Artist in Residency (Sausalito).
